Gathering of family and friends
Obituary of Kevin Halcrow
With deep sadness, the family of Kevin Halcrow of Saint John, NB, announce his death on January 9, 2025. He passed away peacefully at Shannex, Embassy Hall, Quispamsis following a lengthy struggle with dementia.
Kevin was born in Sunderland, UK, on July 9, 1938, the only child of William and Lily (Thompson) Halcrow. After completing grammar school, Kevin attended the University of Manchester where he earned a BSc degree in Biology and a Teaching Certificate. He then moved to Halifax, NS, to complete his MSc and PhD at Dalhousie University.
While at Dal, Kevin met his wife, Sandra. They were married in Grand Falls, NB, on July 18, 1964, and enjoyed a wonderful 55 year marriage, until her death in 2019. They returned briefly to England, with their first born Christopher, but soon decided to return to the Maritimes. The young family moved to Saint John, where Kevin joined the faculty at the newly created UNBSJ. Kevin had a rewarding career there, culminating in his appointment to Chair of the Department of Biology. He retired from UNBSJ in 1999 but continued to teach courses and conduct research for several years post retirement. Kevin taught many courses and conducted research during his time at UNBSJ. He was especially proud to receive the Allan P. Stuart for Excellence in Teaching in 1981.
Kevin is survived by his children; Christopher (Christine) of Quispamsis, Andrew (Shauna), and Susan (Ali), both of Vancouver. He also leaves behind twelve nieces and nephews and nine grandchildren; Nya, Matthew, Malcolm, Maddie, Alex, Graham, Anna, Zach and TJ. He was predeceased by his parents, and wife Sandra (Cushing).
Kevin was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He had a wide range of interests and loved Jazz and Classical music. He was an avid photographer, always preferring film to digital cameras and was a long time member of the Fundy Camera Club. In his early years, he played tennis and squash, and in later life enjoyed daily walks in the various parks and beaches in the area.
At Kevin’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service, instead there will be an open house at 108 Chelsea Drive, Quispamsis on Friday, January 17th from 3-6pm where family, friends and colleagues are invited to come and share their favorite stories and memories. Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506-849-2119). For those who wish, donations in memory of Kevin can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
