T was my very dear friend. We got to know each other when we lived in Westfield. Tor spent a fair amount of time with our four boys riding bikes and staying for supper.
Our visits were very much about family rarely did we not talk about Tor, Maria, Adrianne and Solan. T was always interested in Michael, Rick, Brian, Mark and their families. We also shared the loss of our life partners Joe and Peter.
Tor, Maria, Ariadne and Solan my heart aches for your loss.

Dear Tor, Maria and family, Sandra and I were deeply saddened to read Mary's obituary. We didn't meet often, usually once or twice a year, but our conversations were memorable. We touched on poetry, music and always on you Tor with a family update. We shall miss her but her spirit, her intellect and energy will live on in so many ways. I recall a lively discussion on the sex life of angels - a topic I had not considered before! Richard and Sandra Thorne.

Whether you knew her as your high school teacher or university professor, your friend or associate, you could not help but be impressed and inspired by her intelligence and integrity; by her genuine enthusiasm for her work, her family and for life; for her commitment to her students and to the never-ending quest for knowledge and learning; and you couldn't help but be charmed by that disarming razor-sharp wit and that cheeky, sometimes mischievous, sense of humour that only complemented her brilliance. I will always be grateful for her encouragement and moral support, which continued long after meeting her in the classroom. I consider myself lucky to have known this wonderful intelligent lovely lady. Thank you, T. I wish you a beautiful journey.

My first meeting with Mary was in a conference that she had called with the chairman of the English department at UNBSJ, because she didn't want me in her introductory poetry class. "Look at this essay on Jon Stallworthy!," she said. "I can't teach him anything." I disagreed, and won the opportunity to stay in the course. Over the following three years, she taught me enough to get me admitted to the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship; enough for me to graduate from a program in which Jon Stallworthy was one of the instructors; enough for me to teach poetry on stipend at UNB myself, and become a book critic, and then a journalist. And of all the things I will be forever grateful to Mary for, this is of the least importance.
Her generosity to friends and students knew no bounds. She shared her office, her books, her table, her home. She shared her wit and insight and wisdom - prodigious quantities of each - and what we came away learning was how to be the best version of ourselves; how to be courageous and resilient; how to use our hearts and minds; how to live with verve and panache and style; and how to imbue every moment of life, however challenging, with poetry and meaning. Peter was an expert at these things, too; and life was richer for having them in it.
She was immensely proud of Tor, and her daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren, and justly so. Please accept my deepest condolences. She was a remarkable person.

Peter and T became my family when I first moved to Saint John almost 30 years ago to work for Peter at Betz. I love them both dearly, they helped shape me into the person I am today, and I am so fortunate to have been able to keep them in my life all this time. Their love for each other and for Tor was solid. I know they are happy to be with each other again. I will miss them dearly.

To the family, I am very sorry for your loss. I met T & Peter a few years back through Kevin & Lester. T was always so welcoming and kind to me. Anytime we would visit them at their home, her ability to ‘whip up’ something little (aka a full spread) in no time would amaze me.

Peter and T were old neighbours. I didn’t see them much after I moved but when I did, we had much to chat about. They were both an absolute delight and a wealth of knowledge on any subject to chat over. Will miss this lovely lady, Rest In Peace. May your wonderful memories bring you much comfort. Fondly,
Nadia Zed

“Weapons do not cut this Spirit, fire does not burn it, water does not make it wet, and the wind does not make it dry. The Spirit cannot be cut, burned, wet, or dried. It is eternal, all-pervading, changeless, immovable, and primeval. Dear Mary is beyond space and time. (Bhagavad Gita, 2.23-24)
