Obituary of Donald Edward Mabey
It is with great sadness that the family of Don E. Mabey, beloved husband of the late Gertrude and devoted father of Michael, Deirdre, and the late Suzanne, announces his passing, which occurred peacefully on November 16, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, with family by his side.
Born in New Glasgow, PEI, on November 29, 1934, he was the son of the late Louis Howatt Mabey and Florence Louise Mabey. With degrees from Mount Allison and Dalhousie University, Don began his career as a psychologist at Dorchester Penitentiary. He went on to serve in various community roles across Canada, ultimately retiring from his dedicated career of service as a social worker at Centracare in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Don's true passion was photography, with a lifelong appreciation for landscapes. Starting with self-developing from black and white film, he became an early proponent of digital photography. In his retirement years, Don produced cards and calendars for gift shops that showcased the outdoors and landscapes of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Don was generous to a fault—always kind, accommodating, and thoughtful of others. He was known for his gentle demeanor and his unwavering willingness to help those in need and will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506-849-2119). A private Celebration of Life will be held for the family, and he will be reunited with Gertrude and his daughter Suzanne at the family plot in Chéticamp, Nova Scotia. For those who wish, donations in memory of Don can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
