Obituary of John Douglas Greer

It is with heavy hearts that the family of John D. Greer, husband of June (Arthurs), announces his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital, on Monday, June 24, 2024, after a long and valiant fight with illness.

John was born on December 3, 1946, in Saint John, New Brunswick, and was the son of the late Hartley and Helen (Moore) Greer. During his life, John worked with McAvity Canada where he would manufacture fire hydrants. John is going to be remembered as one of the great story tellers of his family. He always had another story to tell you, even when he just finished telling one. John was someone who if he got distracted in the middle of telling you a story, or if he fell asleep, he would wake up and start back into his story, right where he left off. He had an amazing memory and recalled in great detail the many adventures he had over his lifetime.

John loved his family dearly and had a special connection with his beloved wife, June. They were married 50 years on June 22, 2024, and John held on so he could be there with her for one more special anniversary together. They met at Thorne’s Hardware and as they say the rest is history. When John became a father, he was devoted to his two children and when his grandchildren came along, his heart swelled even more. He never missed a practice or a game and was always there to cheer his family on. He was a big sports fan and loved watching all kinds of sports, but he especially loved watching the Canadian teams during the Olympics, paying special attention to Women’s Hockey, which was his favourite to watch. Not only was John a fan of softball but he also enjoyed playing over 50 years. John’s faith was very important to him, and he found great peace and solace at his church, True Life, where he met many longtime friends in faith. He especially loved going to the Men’s Breakfasts and prayer meetings.

He is survived by his loving wife, June; his son, John (Sarah); daughter, Ellen Greer (Ronald Melanson); beloved grandchildren: RJ (Cardie Webb), Morgan, Kylie, Miguel, Stella Grace, Charlie and Blake; as well as several friends. John was the only child in his family and was predeceased by his parents, as well as his extended family members.

Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd. Quispamsis (506-849-2119), with visiting on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 2:00-7:00 PM at True Life Church, 30 Vincent Road, Rothesay, NB, and a funeral service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM, from True Life Church. Interment will take place in Tynemouth Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
