Obituary of Rodney Howarth Ernest Crowther

It is with profound sadness that the family of Rodney (Rod) Howarth Ernest Crowther announce his passing, with his family by his side, on May 10, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Born on January 21, 1953, in Saint John. He was the son of the late Tom and Marjorie (Braman)Crowther. He grew up in Renforth and became passionate about sailing, swimming, and golf.

Over the years he was an avid chess player, loved skiing, and had a passion for bridge which gave him the unique ability to get together for weekly bridge games with his school friends from Rothesay High School.

He was a member of the Saint John Real Estate Board for many years, and an award winning realtor with ReMax during his 42-year career. Rod specialized in land development.

Rod was a founding member of the Kennebecasis Valley Chamber of Commerce and served as president from 1999-2003. He was  a long time member of the Rothesay Yacht Club and served over the years as Director of Membership, and Director of Sailing and Director of Grounds Club. Rod was a Chairperson for Boy Scouts of Canada Area Council, and a member of The Saint John City and District Pool League, Saint John Chess Club, and member of The Saint John Press Club in earlier years.

Rod always enjoyed a good sail on Fine Print, and when the day was done, he was rafted up at Scouts Beach with friends. He loved the Thursday night races, Fine Print and crew were a force to be reckoned with. At any time when he was on the water, if there was another boat in sight, it was a race!

He is survived by his son Mark of Quispamsis, sisters; Lynn (Joe) Rector of PEI, Holly (Ken) Singh of Saint John, and Heather (Stewart) MacDonald of Upham; his former wife Judy of Rothesay, aunt V.C. Ilie Crowther, cousin Gary Crowther (Eleanor) and his very special and loyal dog Decker, many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Rod will be missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank Doctors, and nurses, in particular Dr. Jacob Michaud, and staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital on 5A North and 4C North for the excellent care given to Rod while in hospital.

Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506 849- 2119). A gathering celebrate Rod’s life will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 3 – 8 PM at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home. Donations in memory of Rod can be made to Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John SPCA or Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides would be appreciated by the family.
