My condolences to Hilary and all Tom’s family and friends on their loss.
I dealt with Tom on many cases in his role at Legal Aid Ontario over the decades. He was a true friend of the defence and of those less fortunate who required the services of legal aid. He had a very difficult job that required matching the endless need (and concerns of grumpy defence lawyers) to a woefully under-funded government program. As others have said, he navigated this difficult road without ever attracting a word of criticism from anyone. It was an amazing accomplishment that required a very special person to achieve. RIP Tom.

I met Tom in 2012's sommelier program. He sat beside me on the first day of class when neither of us knew anybody. Tom put me at ease immediately with his warmth, decorum and good nature. He was the best neighbor that I could've asked for--he tipped me off during blind tastings in class. If he coughed, I knew that the alcohol was above 13.5% abv! We sat together for the whole year and were in the same tasting group. After our program was finished, we kept in touch.
It truly was an honor to have known Tom. It's a privilege to be able to call him a true friend.
My deepest condolences to Hilary and to Tom's family. You are in my prayers.

Tom was such a lovely human being. He was kind, thoughtful and gentle. You left every encounter with him, even a brief passing in the courthouse hallway, feeling your spirit lifted. I am very sad to hear of his passing. He was a mentor and role model to so many. My condolences to his family.

I remember Tommy from St Pius X school. We were in a play together at the school for the Christmas pageant. It was the story of Frosty the snowman. Tommy and I did not have a speaking part but we had to wear stocking caps and needed to be holding sleds. I didn’t have a sled so Tommy brought both but not before we tried them out behind Hillsides grocery store. I lost track of him as we grew up but always wondered how he was. Sounds like he had a very interesting life and very giving to others. My condolences to his family. Rest in Peace Tommy.

My condolences to Tom’s family.
Our families were neighbours on Pugsley Avenue during our early years. The whole family were wonderful individuals and I have amazing memories of spending many hours in the back field playing whatever the sport was for that season.
Tom and Mike’s dad made a rink in their back yard where Michael taught me the nature of the hip check.
I hadn’t seen Tom since those early years. I had heard he was a lawyer in Toronto. It is a lovely legacy to hear of his success and how kind and interesting a man he had become.
To your whole family I am sorry for your loss. I take some solace in reading the life he lived to the fullest.
Rest in peace.

My deepest sympathies to Hilary & the LeRoy family. I had the privilege to work with Tom at LAO. He was a great mentor and friend to everyone. He had a terrific sense of humour and a quick wit. Tom was loved and respected by all of his colleagues for his kind and generous nature and his willingness to share his exceptional knowledge of the law with junior lawyers. Despite his obvious skill as counsel he was extremely humble. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.

Ellen and I first met Tom at UNB over 40 yrs ago. Our friendship flourished to the point where he became the godfather to our son. When Tom was looking for alternative career options after a brief time in the banking industry his passion, compassion and sociability made criminal defense work an obvious choice. His practice flourished and he eventually left our firm (with encouragement) to establish his own practice, where he continued to serve the most vulnerable with unparalleled dedication. Eventually Tom went to Legal Aid Ontario to oversee the budget management of complex criminal cases. His fingerprints are over the majority of serious cases throughout the GTA in more than a decade. He was considered the “go to guy” for criminal defense counsel who wanted to set a budget for complex trial matters. The glowing tributes on the Criminal Lawyer’s website are the best reflection of his success in ensuring the existence of a robust defense bar. Tom was one of those rare criminal lawyers whom no defense counsel could say a bad word about. He will be remembered as a dear friend and colleague who made a genuine effort to make a difference. Tom succeeded all expectations. Finally RIP our dear friend that your memory will always be a blessing.

Sending sincere condolences to the LeRoy family. Both Tommy and his older bro’ Mike plodded over all the North End streets in and around “Portland Place, as many of us did in our growing up days. St Pius elementary, St Pete’s and St Macs all were part of that journey ! The LeRoy name in fuel delivery was commonplace. RIP from Tom Fournier and Debby Lawlor

My sincere condolence for your loss. Tom and I attended STU prior to his attending law school! His skill sets had him involved in organizing trips to Sugarloaf and Rock Concerts in Maine!!!! Tom was well liked by everyone including his crew from Saint John, always supportive at his side!!! A truly popular student with a great server of humour and commitment!!!! As a freshman , Tom took me under his wing and we reconnected when he moved on to Toronto.
He was respected at his new post at Legal Aid Ontario and helped significant individuals facing criminal justice issues for a varied number of reasons, many unavoidable and outside their control. He was a brilliant Lawyer always protecting the Rights of the vulnerable individuals he represented! A great loss !!!! A great young man!!!Sincere condolence to friends of which there were many and family.
We loved Tom and God Bless him and may his soul find eternal rest!

My condolences to Hilary and to the extended Read and LeRoy families. I knew Tom from the hallways of Old City Hall, as a Big Case Manager at Legal Aid Ontario, and as a co-worker and friend at the Senior Counsel Program. I benefitted from his calm sagacity, enjoyed his dry wit, and invariably was impressed by his knowledge of mental health law. He championed his clients interests and was often called upon by judges to be a friend of the court as well; in the latter role invariably benefiting the process. So many clients, lawyers, co-workers, judges and others have benefitted from his wise decision; to leave banking law and to pursue the career he loved and at which he excelled.

No matter how difficult or stressful the task, he was always there to provide careful mentorship, kindness and support with wit and humour. He made a real difference to the lives of clients he assisted, and also to all of us who worked with him and benefited from his extraordinary generosity. Condolences to Hilary, and his entire family.

Sept/71--start of year #2 at St Thomas U--Tom and I are moving into our first off-campus apartment on Beaverbrook Court in Fredericton--moving day included playing two newly released LPs--RAM (the McCartneys) and Every Picture Tells a Story (Rod Stewart)--the turntable was one of those sound-in-the-round units (grey bottom with black plastic round top)--one of the external speakers had no housing so we used a plastic milk jug to amplify its sound--good times, Young Man, good times! Condolences to Hilary (and brother, Jim) and to Jack and Mike Leroy and the extended LeRoy family.

So so sorry to hear about Tom! I have a lot of great memories of him. He took me to a few hockey games in Toronto, we went to see Blue Rodeo at the El Mocambo, and drank tea together (sometime it was weasel piss, his name for weak tea). He was a great brother in law to me! So sad!
