Obituary of Ruth Steed

Steed, (Helen) Ruth – It is with very heavy hearts that the family of H. Ruth Steed, wife of the late Roger Steed, announces her passing, which occurred on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Kingsway Care Centre. Ruth was born on June 21, 1943, in Middleton, Nova Scotia, and was the daughter of the late Rev. T. R. B. Anderson and Helen (Dimock).

Ruth spent her working years as a teacher, where she had the opportunity to brighten the lives of elementary students. She took great pride working as principal relief at Ketepec Elementary School and as a supply teacher for local schools. Ruth spent her youth growing up among various Anglican parishes as her father was a church minister. She was a longtime parishioner of Trinity Anglican Church where she felt right at home. Ruth had many fond memories of summers spent on Herman’s Island, at her family cottage, between Mahone Bay and Lunenburg in Nova Scotia. Ruth loved to swim in the cold salt water of the Atlantic Ocean or sun herself on the wharves at the beach. The South Shore of Nova Scotia will always hold a piece of Ruth’s heart. Ruth loved being a mother and raising her three children. She volunteered with Girl Guides of Canada and was a Brownie Leader (Tawny Owl) for many years. Ruth’s love of children transcended beyond her own and she truly helped raise her community. She also loved being in the audience when her husband played his oboe with Symphony New Brunswick. She will be remembered as a creative and crafty individual; she loved to knit and quilt with her friends and partook in various clubs. Ruth adored her grandchildren and took any opportunity she could to support and be with them. She also loved animals and enjoyed cuddling up with the family fur babies. Ruth was a caregiver and anyone in need could always count on her for assistance. She always put others before herself. She made birthdays and holidays a special event and put fun, joy, and happiness in everything she did.

She is survived by her son, Geoffrey (Linda) Steed; daughters, Catherine (David) Bishop and Andrea (Allen) Fry; grandchildren: Ashley and Tyler Bishop, Jason and Olivia Steed, Logan and Sierra Fry; sister, Mary (Wayne) Rhoades, sister in laws, Kathy Steed and Brenda (Bill) Laing, nieces Valerie Rhoades, Jocelyn Whaley and Karyn Steed. Nephews Robert Rhoades and Christopher Laing. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Roger and her parents.

Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd. Quispamsis, NB, (506-849-2119). Visitation will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 115 Charlotte Street, Saint John, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, March 15, 2024. A funeral service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM. For those unable to attend, a live stream will be available by clicking the link on the left hand side of Ruth’s obituary. Interment will take place in Trinity Anglican Columbarium. Donations made to Trinity Anglican Church Bell Restoration Campaign, Romero House, or First Steps would be appreciated by the family. Thank you.
