Jean and family, I’m so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Mr. MacDonald. I had the privilege of being one of his Economics students at KVHS almost 40 years ago. Although he was just starting out in teaching at that time, he was already a great teacher, and made learning enjoyable. He was such a nice guy, and will be missed.

To the family of Dr. L MacDonald.
I first met Larry at KVHS, I was in his economics class the first year teaching there. He was the coolest teacher at the school for so many of us. The most unique thing about him was his infectious personality. He cared about everyone and wanted you to succeed. I stayed in contact with him over the years, running into him just about everywhere. He was always the same warm, friendly and happy guy. I just saw him at Home Depot in the winter, we chatted for over an hour, which seemed like 15 minutes.
This news is heart breaking, I know how much his family meant to him, even if I had only met some of you when running into Larry.
I am so very sad for you all, we lost an AMAZING individual. I only wish I had of spent more time visiting with him.
Please Cherished all your memories, I am sure them are many. I know I sure have lots.
Thinking of you all, God Bless you.

I remember being a skinny kid in high school shaking Larry’s hand and feeling his iron grip. Of course I would show no sign of concern for the bones in my hand creaking and popping trying to match his strength, all while maintaining eye contact with a smile. “How you doing today brother”. Larry was a man’s man.. and I seriously looked up to him, which I can’t say about a lot of people. I would say it’s safe to say he will be missed by thousands. Your family is in our thoughts Shannon.

To the loving family of Dr. MacDonald:
Our family sends you much love and strength as you mourn your husband and father. I am sure that in the coming days and weeks you will be surrounded by stories of the way that he impacted the lives of his students. Two of our children had the privilege of being in Dr. MacDonald's classes at Rothesay High. Our daughter (a class of 22 grad) had a special place in her heart for him. When I called her to share the sad news she said to me: "I had him for Law in grade 11 and he would always tell me that I could do anything that I wanted and would be a perfect fit for higher educations and law in particular. He was super important to e in planning my future." She just finished her first year of University at STU, finishing the year on the Dean's List and is continuing her education in Human Rights and Philosophy.
Thank you for sharing your precious family member with our kids. His work made a difference.

Lornie was someone who was involved in my life as far back as I can remember. He always used to call whenever my name was in the paper for scoring goals, and was adamant about how good I was at refereeing hockey. Lornie was always so kind, supportive, and had an incredible sense of humour. He was such a loyal, reliable friend to my dad, and was always there for us when needed.
I’ve been an educator for 12 years now, and hope to be for many more. If I can have anywhere near the impact that Lornie did, I will have had a successful career.

I met Lornie in 1980 at KV High. I was in grade 12 and it was his first year of teaching. He was as much a friend, as a teacher, right from the start. He took Bill Sanford, Rob Watt and i to the Aiken Centre in Fredericton to watch an Ali fight on a big screen that year. He woke up Danny McGuire before school one day to haul a deer he shot out of the woods. Lornie went to teach that day with a deer on the roof of his car dripping blood down the windshield. Over the next 42 years we would have many conversations about boxing and MMA fights. He loved hearing about what i was up to and sharing many laughs. He would come in my shop shouting out “Hey Brother” or “Hey Jake’. Ever since high school hockey he called me Jake, as in Jake LaMotta. My last conversation with him in the fall of 2021 we laughed about me playing the piano and reciting poetry. I will miss his positive spirit. I am so sorry to hear of his early passing.

Dear Jean and family,
Our family was lucky to be your neighbours for years and later Sarah and Michael were blessed to have been influenced by Lornie at RHS. We will always remember his happy face, neighbourly ways, dedication to teaching and the true love he had for his family.
We are so sorry for your loss. We will keep all of you in our prayers.

Lawrence was a treat to work with in my time at Rothesay High. Every morning a happy greeting, every minute spent on his students. He regaled me with tales from his career and in reviewing the contents of his classroom he could tell me about each student and their contribution! He loved his job and while I am glad he got to enjoy retirement every time I would see him he would say he missed it! He was truly a man who found his calling and we were all blessed to know him. My heart is broken for Jean, the boys and all his loved ones. Thank you for allowing him to share his light with so many students and staff.

My partner and I had the good fortune of running into Larry on the trails this Saturday past. We were well met on such a beautiful day and he stopped to pat the dog and chat with us for a bit.
Larry meant a lot to me and the other kids who grew up in this town. He was one of those teachers who encouraged you to stand up a little taller and work at difficult things - not because there was some trick to easy success, but because difficult things were worth doing.
His impact was deeply felt by many and my appreciation for it grew over the years whenever we had the opportunity to talk. These impromptu meetings often occurred when we stopped an afternoon or evening walk to stand in the shade and catch up. He was always interested to hear how things were going and I was always happy to be able to exchange stories.
Though he will be dearly missed, I think it goes without saying that his good words and constructive example will echo for generations through the lives he touched in our community.
Reading the obituary made me smile. The last thing he said to my partner and I on Saturday after we ran into him was "have a positive and pleasant day!" He continued on his way down the trail having made ours a little lighter with his positive outlook and good humor. We certainly did have the type of day he wished for us (and no doubt many others) that afternoon.

I’m so sorry very to hear of Lornie’s untimely passing. I bumped into him several years ago in downtown Toronto and when he heard that I worked in healthcare he spoke with great affection of a student who had sustained an injury. He was a caring teacher and bursting with pride for that young person. My sincere condolences to the MacDonald family and to the many students and athletes who benefited from his advocacy and mentorship.

Terribly saddened to hear of Lawrence's passing. I had the great fortune to be a student of his at KVHS in 86/87 in the waning years of what was then the Ancient History curriculum. I could scarcely have imagined such a fiercely proud Maritimer embracing with prodigious passion and aplomb the importance of our global heritage and insisting upon his students becoming citizens of the world. His optimism, humor and intellectual curiosity were infectious, his genuine character and quick wit a cherished resource shared selflessly. We have lost a very special one. Thoughts and prayers to Lawrence's family at this time.

Uncle Lornie made such an impact on those he knew and will be greatly missed by all. I’ll miss his stories, humour, intellect and witty greetings. He never failed to put a smile on others’ faces and I’m happy to have had him as my uncle. The memories he made will live on and he will never be forgotten.

So sorry to hear of Lawrence's passing. He was an outstanding teacher, who had the skill to be able to identify with his pupils and generate an interest in subjects which carried on into their adult lives. Also a great raconteur in social gatherings. He will be missed.

My most deepest condolences to all of the family.
Mr. MacDonald taught myself and a great group of friends over my years at Rothesay High School. His amazing rapport with us kids at the time helped shape who I am today. His skill of teaching us while also being fun, and “cool” made him Legendary amongst those of his students I know and grew up with. I know there are years worth of students who also had their lives positively impacted by this great man. I cherish my graduation picture of him and I so much, it has lived on every refrigerator I’ve ever owned. I’m so grateful to have been a student and a friend Mr. MacDonald. Please Rest Easy.

My thoughts are with you all. I first met Lawrence when I was in high school and went on to work with him for my entire career. I have too many fond memories of him to even discuss here. I just loved the way he positively greeted all his students no matter what was going on. He always said it was all about engagement with the kids, and that he did. He was just a great guy to know.
