My great-uncle Allan was more than a great uncle. He was most certainly great, but more of a grandfather than an uncle. I finally got to meet him in 2001 when I moved down east with my mum, Debbie (who still to this day calls uncle Allan her hero).
I maintained contact with Uncle Al when I moved back to Alberta and saw him every time I would visit. We would have lots of laughs and stories, and shamelessly goad eachother about our conflicting sports teams (GO OILERS, I know you can see this Unc). Uncle Al protected my mum and auntie Becky the best he could from a particularly harmful ex-husband of his sister June, their mother, and I can speak on both their behalves that it will never be forgotten. Uncle Allan also made me feel closer to my late grandfather Paul Shephard, whom my mother nor myself never met, by telling great stories including one about how my grandfather saved his life. Thank you so much for being such a wonderful uncle, brother, father, son, and friend to many. I'll never forget the time and the laughs we shared, Unc. I know you'll be with me in spirit when I'm screaming at the Jays on my TV! Rest easy.
