I was so sorry to just recently hear of Kit’s passing in December. I was his secretary during his posting to Welland over several years, back in the late 70s, and had just recently been in touch through the Royal Bank retirees website. Kit was a wonderful manager to work for and his wife Lynn was a lovely lady, to whom he was really devoted. My sympathies to all his family on the loss of this lovely person.

I fondly remember my time as assistant manager in Welland Ontario from 1976 to 1978. Kit was a great boss and mentor. I learned many things from Kit that helped me successfully navigate a 38 year career with RBC. There was also the hockey that we tried to play in an industrial league. I believe Kit still holds the record for most goals against in a single game - but we all laughed about it and had fun. Great memories. Our sincerest condolences to Lynn and family. Bob & Diane Bell

Very sorry to hear of Kit's death in the recent RBC publication. Our banking relationship goes back to 1977 when I got transferred to the main Branch in Welland as a loans officer and Kit was the branch manager. In January of that year, we had the largest snow blizzard the Niagara Penisnula has ever had and it was named the Blizzard of 77, I also remember Kit been carried out of the branch having suffered a medical emergency in his bank office in the am. In the PM that day, he was back to work. We had a great working team at the branch.Made some great friends I still socialize with today.
We also played in a recreational hockey league in the Niagara Peninsula. Kit was our goaltender. In one of our games, I guess he must have been subject to 50 to 60 shots on goal. While we got blown out that game, Kit made some fantastics saves that game. When I went over to congratulate him on one he made, he was a little slow in getting up. He said he was exausted and could not. We had a great chuckle and a few of the boys helped him back up for more punishment.
A great team player and a great banker. RBC was fortunate to have him in their employ. All the best to his wife and the kids.
RIP good friend.

It is with very heavy heart that I send my love to you all at this very sad time. I know your hearts are broken, as is mine, at the loss of yet another brother. Kit was always, ALWAYS there for me, thru good times and not so good times, providing me with support and love. I will miss him terribly and I will especially miss his phone calls. He would always answer with “Elly Belly” how are you???? He was the only brother that ever called me that. and the only one who I would allow to call me that. When I talked to him, just before Xmas, that is how he answered the phone and as always he ended it with “I Love You.!
I have so many fond memories of Kit as I was growing up, tho sadly being nearly 7 years older, I did not get to see as much of him as I would have liked. One of those cherished memories is when I was offered a senior position with Scotiabank (yes, I was the traitor in the family) and Kit called to congratulate me. I was so scared as I had no idea how to supervise people. His words of advice to me were “don’t worry Elly, just treat everyone like you would like to be treated and you will be fine”. Such wise words as he was right, I did exactly that and it paid off big time. My second biggest memory is when I was about 12 or 13, Kit had come home for the w/end (he was working in Berwick, N.S. at the time) and was standing out on our front porch smoking. As I stood beside him, in awe, he asked me if I wanted to try taking a puff. Of course I said yes, and at his instructions I inhaled and then tried to exhale thru my nose. Well I coughed and choked and turned various shades of green, I can honestly say that I never put another cigarette to my mouth again! Thank you Kit!!
Kit was devoted to his loving wife Lynn, his 4 children and his grand children and was so very proud of each and every one of them. He had a wonderful life, and tho these past two years have been tough ones for him, I am thankful he is now free from pain and in a better place.
He may have left this earth but I know he will be in ALL of our hearts forever! I love you Kit!

I want you to know my thoughts are with you and the whole family. I remember having lots of great times with Uncle Kit and the family growing up. He was an amazing man, a cherished uncle, and honored to have him as my godfather. I remember the first golf club he gave me, it was a 7 wood (I said,, What's a 7 wood?). Never has it left my golf bag, and nor will it as it.

The world will be a sadder place without this wonderful man. Joan and I cherished his friendship which dates back 40 years or so. Even though many miles separated us from time to time we never lost touch, visited when possible both here in Sarasota and in N.B. and spoke frequently. We are deeply saddened by his passing and will miss him greatly.

Dear Aunt Lynn and Family,
With a heavy heart we send our condolences to you all and know there is a void never filled when people so loved by us pass on. I have the fondest memories of times with you and Uncle Kit, David, Mara and Kristen. Great memories of times in the Bahamas as well as at the farm, and at your homes in Canada, where as a child I remember being fascinated by the fact that it was still light outside at 9:00pm and you could ride bikes at that hour at your home. I thought it was just your home that held that magic. I’m sure Kit created those magical moments for all of you many times over. I know he is sorely missed and pain and hurtis taking up all the space in you minds and hearts. We pray that will ease as happier memories replace the sadness you’re feeling today. We love you all so very much and are there with you virtually on Tuesday. Much love always, Chris and Alexis

This is a very sad time for the Payn family. My brother, Kit, has left us - and created a void that cannot be replaced.
Words cannot express how the loss of a brother will affect all of us, but none more so than Lynne, David, Mara, Kristin and Jim, who have lost their father, husband, and an anchor in their lives. I know that only hugs and prayers will help ease the emptiness they are all feeling right now. I wish I were closer to embrace all of you.
Val and I, along with my brother, David, and our sisters, Beverly and Elly and their spouses, are also grieving with Lynne and their children.
My memories of Kit, as a big brother is that I didn't get to know as well as I would have liked. He left home by the time I got to an age to appreciate having a big brother such a big brother. What I do know is that I was always excited to tell my Granville Ferry friends that my brother, Kit, was a " first star goalie for RBC". (Kit would confirm this).
I remember Kit coming home with his beautiful new wife, Lynne, in a big, pink-colored Imperial that had more buttons than my shirts. My big brother was cool! I was always proud to speak of my brother, Kit, as he had an influencing demeanor from a very early age. Years passed by, and we never really got to connect as much as I would have liked. But what I do know is that Kit was always there for me when I was struggling. His words were calming, and he was there to give loving and helpful advice, if I asked.
Over the years, I saw my brother as a very strong, loving husband and dad who cherished his wife and adored his children. They filled his heart with happiness; they were so very important to him.
Now, while Kit is gone, his memory and spirit will remain very close to all of us.
I love you, my brother, and I pray for you as you move on. Your family will take good care of Lynne, as she will them. and make sure she maintains the garden that you loved so much.
Rest in peace, Kit,
Your baby brother, Bob

Dear Lynn and Family.,
Saddened to hear of Kit's passing, and please accept my condolences and heartfelt sympathy from all of Kit's fellow and past Rotarians.
I met Kit in 2009 when I joined Rotary in Saint John. Kit impressed me with his sincerity and good humour. As we got to know each other Kit told me about growing up as a boy in rural Nova Scotia, and how he built a career with RBC that allowed him to see Canada and other countries. Kit cared, cared about Rotary, cared about his community and most of all cared about his family.
In 2014 at our charter night, Kit was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by his fellow Rotarians - Kit was at a loss for words and I'll always remember that smile. He was, and will forever be an inspiration and a person to remember for his kindness, common sense and commitment to the Rotary motto "service above self" .
