Obituary of Shirley Viola Setzke

She was a beauty with coal black hair and radiated a quiet, inner peace. Born in Moncton on September 21st, 1926, Shirley was the daughter of the late Ernest and Viola (Dixon) Price. After graduating from Hampton Consolidated School she went on to successfully complete grade 13 at Saint John High School. Following high school, she taught school for one year at Tenant’s Cove but heeding a call for adventure and higher education, she enrolled in the Newton-Wellesley School of Nursing in Massachusetts from which she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She also received a diploma for extra training in obstetrical nursing at Providence Lying in Hospital, Rhode Island. As a registered nurse, Shirley worked throughout the New England States as well as Fredericton and Saint John. She was also camp nurse for two years at the Gyro Fresh Air Camp, Grand Bay-Westfield, for underprivileged children. After marrying the “love of her life”, Robert, she was blessed with two children, her daughter, Pamela of Toronto and her son, Helmuth “Robert” of Darlings Island. Her family eventually grew to include her “favorite daughter-in-law” Lorie. She embraced the role of “home maker” and for many years, as a family, they spent their weekends camping, fishing, swimming, boating, laughing and barbequing. Shirley also garnered enjoyment from gardening, creating beautiful gardens to match the family homes built by her husband. Later in life, she was blessed with her only grandchild, Esmee Anna Marie, and took a keen interest in her life. On Friday, December 9th, 2011 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Shirley’s fulfilled life peacefully ended. Besides her loving husband, Shirley is also survived by her two devoted children; her daughter-in-law; her granddaughter; two sisters, Olive Gulliver of Lincoln and Claire Sanford of Bloomfield; one brother, Harold (Shirley) of Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her fun-loving brother, Murray. At the family’s request, no visitation or public funeral service will be held. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John. Arrangements are entrusted to Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506) 849-2119. For those who wish, donations may be made to Canadian Red Cross.
