Obituary of Stanley Materniak
Materniak, Stanley - Peacefully and after an amazing fight to survive, Stan passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters at the Saint John Regional Hospital on April 18, 2008 following a short period of illness. He was born in Poland in 1948, the son of Helen Oberc (of Toronto) and the late Jan Materniak. He was predeceased by his stepfather who he considered to be his own, Michael Oberc. Stan leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Sue (nee Tremblay) and his most cherished daughters Danielle (Trevor) of London, ON and Stefanie (Jason) of Quispamsis, NB who feel so unbelievably grateful to have had him in their lives and have so many wonderful memories to keep in their hearts. Stan also leaves behind one brother Mathew Oberc (Gosia) of Mississauga and his two sons. He dearly loved nephews Marc Pinet (Halifax, NS) and Jacques and Denis Haché (Dieppe, NB) and niece Michelle Pinet (Bathurst, NB). We know Stan will miss watching the Argo’s games with his best friend of many years, Barry Brewer. Stan’s littlest buddy, Max the cat, will undoubtedly miss him most. Besides his family and friends, Stan’s passion was definitely his work and his love of all things in the aviation world. An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer for the past 40 years, he worked at Irving Oil Transport for the past 19 years. The friends and coworkers that Stan met along the way were a great source of happiness and provided him with countless comical stories to recount throughout the years (and anyone who knew Stan knows he enjoyed recounting stories). We know he will be dearly missed and the kindness and generosity shown to him and his family by the entire Irving family and all of his fellow engineers, pilots, and other coworkers has truly been remarkable. To the staff of the Cardiac Care Unit and the phenomenal staff of the Medical Intensive Care Unit where Stan spent much of the past 3 weeks of his life - your kindness, compassion and caring is appreciated beyond what words could even begin to describe. We wish we could remember all of your names to thank you individually. Anyone who knew Stan knew he was a laid back guy and to remain true to his nature there will be no visitation or formal funeral service. Following cremation which has been entrusted to Kennebecasis Select Community Funeral Home (www.kennebecasisfh.com) there will be a private graveside internment on Tuesday April 22, 2008. On Friday, April 25 2008 there will be a party in celebration of the wonderful and easygoing person that Stan was from 7-10 pm at the Amsterdam Inn on Millennium Drive in Quispamsis. The family invites all to come to this casual event to share their good memories and stories and enjoy some food, drink and good music - just as Stan would’ve loved! In lieu of flowers, we request that a donation be made in Stan’s name to the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary ICU Visitor Lounge fund to go toward improvements to the medical intensive care waiting area.
