The richest man in New Brunswick
By Neil Collishaw
In the mid 1950s the received wisdom in Ontario was that people in Ontario were rich and people in New Brunswick were poor. Many in Ontario still believe that to this day. The received wisdom was incorrect. It was incorrect then and it is incorrect now. And I can prove it.
During the 1950s, when I was not yet a teenager, every year our family, or some of us, travelled to New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to visit my mother’s close and extended family. Without fail, we would stop for a few days at the Steeves’ farm in Plumweseep, New Brunswick. It was there that I met the richest man I ever knew, my first cousin, Glendon Steeves. And he was just a teenager, just six years older than me. In fact, his whole family was rich.
The first indication of family wealth was where the train stopped. On request, the CNR passenger train stopped right in the Steeves’ front yard to let the Collishaw tribe off. No one else got on or off, just us. I had never heard of such a thing in Ontario. The train never did that in London, Ontario. Only rich people could have a train stop in their front yard. (Later, Sheila Mackinnon, now Sheila Steeves, and Barbara Varty, now Barbara Collishaw, had less than happy experiences with the CNR train. In their turn, each would be frightened out of a deep sleep by the CNR train barrelling through their bedrooms in the middle of the night, but that is another story.)
Then there was the gun. A real gun, a 22 calibre rifle. I had never seen a gun. Only rich people could have a gun. Glendon and his brothers explained to me that it was needed to shoot the groundhogs that were raiding the corn field. But first I had to practice shooting bottles and cans lined up on the fence. I don’t think I ever hit any bottles or cans or any groundhogs, but I can still remember the sharp pain in my shoulder from the recoil for failing to follow instructions and not holding the rifle correctly. Glendon, as always, accepted the failings of his poor city cousin with humour and good grace.
A swimming hole! Glendon and his brothers had their own swimming hole in the Kennebecasis River and their own beach on their own land.
A covered bridge! They had a covered bridge and the covered bridge had a missing board (Perhaps Glendon had removed it.) The hole where the board used to be was kid-sized and was just above the swimming hole. Perfect for daring jumping. These were riches beyond the wildest dreams of this poor kid from London, Ontario.
In addition to the riches he shared with his family, Glendon had riches of his own. He had his own ox! And his own ox cart! No such things existed on the city streets of London, Ontario. Not even in the richest neighbourhoods. Glendon was happiest when making others happy. And in those days, nothing made him happier than driving an ox-cart full of happy cousins around the back roads of rural New Brunswick.
Well, perhaps the Irvings have more money. I prefer to measure riches in happiness and happiness created in others. And in this Glendon Steeves knew no equal. We who knew him are all the richer for it. With his passing, these riches are sustained by our memories of Glendon Steeves, the richest man in New Brunswick.

Thinking of Glendon always only makes me smile to myself. Instantly I recall the summer Glendon I knew best - wearing red flannel with his big grin, at the log cottage he built, always prepared boat wise or food wise for something fun and memorable - whether it be water skiiing or skimming or tubing, collecting water lilies, camping, recalling a “wampus” story, toasting marshmellows, racing frogs, or preparing to eat a lobster dinner with upwards of 20 guests. I was so lucky enough to spend the full summer, ‘86 I think, living with Glendon, Edna, Blair & Cynthia at the cottage. I’ve only known Glendon to be hard-working, generous, and kind with a great love for the outdoors and seeing others happy in the moment. While he will be dearly missed, he will never be forgotten and it is so great to see his “joy for life and giving” carry down to Persis, Cynthia and Blair onwards.

Glendon clearly had an impact on everyone whose lives he touched. I was just little when I got to see the man with the beautiful log home who lived in nature and was kind to all.
My dad, Neil Collishaw, always speaks highly and with a warm smile of his first cousin, Glendon. My whole life, Glendon's kindness and ways that he prioritized the best parts of life has surrounded me through family stories, and I am so grateful for his influence!
Sending love,
Mary Ann (now living in New Brunswick in a beautiful home by a river, soaking up nature and welcoming family as they travel to and from PEI)

The celebration of the life of Glendon is a tribute to a man to be admired for his many skills and character, a man of thoughtfulness, kindness, giving to others, while being as humble as any man as I have known. I remember thinking many times in my life that "when I grow up I want to be just like Glendon". Although I tried I never made it to Glendon’s level.
Glendon made a lifelong impression on me as he did on many. He could fix anything and if he couldn’t fix it he build a new one. His log home on the St. John River is testament to his skill, ingenuity and determination. I always wanted a log house.
I first met Glendon C 1948 when a car full of Steeves from Plumweseep came to Malden Massachusetts for a visit in an old, then new, Studebaker: Wendell, Winnie, Glendon, Allen, Ross, and little one year old John.
The Steeves clan is my mother’s first cousins, notably Winnie Steeves. My mother, Martha Ross Twombly, was brought up in the old MacLean/Ross farm in Fortune, PEI by her Uncle Neil and Aunt Lottie. She moved to the states in 1918 to attend nursing school on Concord, NH. Then to New York where she met and married dad, my father Charlie Twombly. They were married in New York, moved to Pittsburgh then to Malden where we grew up. Aunt Lottie MacLaine, Winnie’s mother, is dad’s first cousin. That is why we have so many double second cousins roaming Canada and the states.
Glendon will be deeply missed by the many friends and relatives that he has left behind but his character and soul will live on with unending joy in our hearts. We have been blessed by Glendon’s life and friendship as kids playing in Malden, visits in NB and PEI. For this blessing I give thanks to God.

I met Glendon, his mum, his other brothers and their wives, kids cousins and other relatives through John. And what a fortunate person I’ve been because of it. My memories of Glendon are many, perhaps best summed up by the word ‘good’. I remember Glendon as a truly good person, as good a person as one could find in this world. It was a great privilege to know him.

Sorry to hear of Glen's passing we send our Prayers and Sympathy to Persis and family. I met Glen on Gorham's Bluff when I was building my brothers cottage. Arriving every day and being greeted by Glen made the daily trip a Joy. He worried more about me working alone that spring and summer , he was never far away if I needed help, ice cream to cool down daily and a watchful eye to keep me safe. He was there with brother John and his tractor when would put the trusses up, he was so impressed with that roof. One morning he said I got a deal for you , he had many lawn mowers in his yard he was selling , the one he liked was this old Snapper he had a hard time keeping running , it would start run then quit he said , its yours , I said yes. A recondition carb. and still good today. I guess I talked enough but God gave me a Guardian Angle that summer in Glen , God Bless you friend.
