Obituary of Lorna Catherine McVicar

Devoted daughter, caring sister, loyal loving wife, amazing mother, very proud grandmother and great grandmother, faithful friend. With true appreciation of a life well lived, the family of Lorna Catherine McVicar announces her passing which occurred after a period of failing health on January 22, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was born on May 28th 1925, in Glace Bay, NS to the late Donald and Christine (Ferguson) MacLennan. Lorna graduated from Glace Bay High School and Nova Scotia Teachers (Normal) College in Truro, NS. She was dedicated to her career as a teacher and loved to “play school” with her grandchildren. She taught in schools in Cape Breton, and ended her career at the Dr. William Roberts Hospital School in Saint John, where she taught from 1964-1985. Lorna had a love of music – she was an organist and choir director in Cape Breton. Lorna was also involved in many church activities in Saint John and Rothesay and she was a life member of the U.C.W. Lorna lived her life to do unto others. Lorna was a member of the Riverside Country Club, and enjoyed both curling and golf, especially her usual Thursday 10:10(AM) group. She also loved to play bridge, playing socially in several clubs. Even with her failing eyesight, Lorna loved completing crossword puzzles with her daughter Leslye and playing cribbage with her daughter Audrey. She often sent her friends and family a poem to celebrate special occasions. After retirement, Lorna and her late husband Joe enjoyed their winters at their home in Scottsdale Arizona, where she and her sister spent many hours searching out bargains, soaking up the sun and refining her golf and bridge games. Lorna is survived by daughters Leslye (Michael Bishop) and Audrey (Scott Kennedy), brothers Gordon (Anne Marie) and Donald (Diane) MacLennan, grandchildren Emily (Michael Ashley) and Stephen (Ashley) Kennedy, and Gregory (Cindy) Bishop and Christina (Kevin) Harvey, and great grandchildren Harlow, Khoa, and Bodhi Kennedy, Elliott and Nigel Bishop, and Rory Harvey. Besides her parents, Lorna was predeceased by her husband of 55 years Joseph, and her sisters Esther, Beryl, and Greta. The end of Lorna’s life was difficult but that does not change how much she did, how much she valued the different aspects of her life, while always maintaining her ever pleasant manner. Lorna was an inspiration to her family and she will be missed by all who knew her. Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (849-2119) with visiting on Tuesday, January 26 , 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at St. David’s United Church, Rothesay at 11:00 AM. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens in Sydney,NS at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations will be greatly appreciated to the St. David’s United Church, Kennebecasis Public Library, or to a charity of the donor's choice
